Earth has a core of molten iron. Another reason I love steel as a medium is because it is exciting to work. One is required to get down and dirty with industrial equipment and frequently with fire and/or high voltage, but it can be worked with rhythm and at speed to produce compelling, powerful, and durable outdoor results. It can be improvised, refined, and reworked directly, hot or cold depending on the gage, sometimes it seems with the speed of observation or thought.
These sculptures in all media are mostly informed by the material itself and my work from life. Otherwise, commissioned 3D portraits have thus-far been derived from snapshots in-the-round. Notwithstanding, sitters are always welcome.
The late spate of landscape paintings was inspired by corrective eyelid surgeries in mid-career. These expanded my field of vision. From there, I went on to rediscover paint and a genre that had, up to the surgeries, confounded me. The drawings and paintings here are made direct from life or from vistas on site.
